St. Louis County Marriage Filings

The St. Louis County Recorder of Deeds, currently Gerald E. Smith, handles marriage records for all Florissant residents. The office sits at 41 South Central Avenue in Clayton, on the 4th floor of the Lawrence K. Roos County Government Building. This is the county seat, about 12 miles south of Florissant. Do not confuse the St. Louis County office with the St. Louis City Recorder. They are separate offices serving different areas.

St. Louis County has marriage records from 1877 to the present. Records before 1876 are held at St. Louis City Hall because St. Louis City and County were one jurisdiction until they split that year. If you need a record from before 1877, you will need to contact the St. Louis City Recorder of Deeds instead.

Note: Bring cash to the Clayton office since they do not accept cards for marriage license applications.

Florissant Records Before 1877

One important detail for Florissant residents looking for older marriage records: St. Louis County only has records from 1877 forward. Before 1876, St. Louis City and County were the same jurisdiction. When they split, the older records stayed with the city. So if you need a marriage record from before 1877 that would have been filed in what is now St. Louis County, you need to contact the St. Louis City Recorder of Deeds at City Hall, 1200 Market Street, St. Louis, MO 63103. Their phone number is (314) 622-4610.

Under Chapter 193 RSMo, Missouri has maintained a statewide marriage index since July 1948. For anything older, you have to go through the county or city office that holds the original records. The Missouri Recorders Association provides a directory of all county offices, which can help if you are unsure which jurisdiction holds the records you need.
