How to Search Sullivan County Marriage Records

To search for a marriage record in Sullivan County, visit or call the Recorder of Deeds in Milan. Give them the full name of at least one spouse and the rough date of the marriage. The staff will check the index and pull the file if they have it. They can make plain copies right there or issue a certified copy for about $9.

Sullivan County has records going back to 1845. That is over 180 years of marriage filings. The older records are stored in bound books at the courthouse. They may take a bit longer to pull than recent files. If you need something from the 1800s, let the staff know ahead of time so they can have it ready when you come in.

You can also send a written request by mail. Mail it to the Sullivan County Recorder at 109 N Main Street, Suite 20, Milan, MO 63556. Include the names of the spouses, the approximate date, and a check for the copy fee. Add a stamped return envelope. Most mail requests get processed in two to three weeks.

Getting a Marriage License in Sullivan County

Both people must come to the Sullivan County Recorder's office together. Bring valid photo ID and your Social Security number. Missouri has no blood test. There is no wait time. You fill out the application, pay the $46 fee, and walk out with the license the same day.

Under RSMo 451.090, the license is valid for 30 days and can be used in any Missouri county. After the wedding, the officiant must return the signed license to the Sullivan County Recorder within 15 days per RSMo 451.130. Once it gets filed, the marriage becomes part of the permanent record in Sullivan County. If either person was married before, they need to provide the month and year that prior marriage ended. Missouri law requires both parties to be at least 18 years old as of August 28, 2025.

Sullivan County Marriage Certificates

A certified copy from the Sullivan County Recorder shows all the details. Names, date, location, officiant, witnesses. That is the full certificate. You need it for name changes at the Social Security office, the DMV, banks, and insurance companies. The fee for a certified copy is about $9.

The Missouri Bureau of Vital Records in Jefferson City has marriage records from July 1, 1948 forward. They issue a Certified Statement Relating to Marriage, which is shorter. It only shows the names, date, and county. If you need the full certificate from a Sullivan County marriage, you have to go to the Recorder in Milan. The state statement is fine if you just need proof that a marriage happened somewhere in Missouri.

You can order the state statement by mail, in person, or through VitalChek online. VitalChek charges an extra service fee. Under RSMo 193.255, certified copies are only issued to people with a direct and tangible interest in the record.

Historical Marriage Records in Sullivan County

Sullivan County was organized on February 14, 1845. Marriage records stretch all the way back to that year. That is a collection spanning more than 180 years. The Recorder in Milan is the primary source for these old files.

The Missouri State Archives in Jefferson City holds microfilm copies of many Sullivan County records. You can search the County and Municipal Records Database online to browse what has been scanned.
